About Coquina:

Coquina is a type of limestone made from naturally cemented shell and sand. The name comes from the tiny coquina clam, one of the rock’s most common shelly components. Some coquina layers are mostly shell, while others are primarily sand — each piece reflecting the dynamic movement of the sea that shaped it.

Origin:

Coquina formed when waves swept together layers of shell hash and sand. Over time, the shells partially dissolved and were bathed in calcium carbonate–rich seawater. As calcite crystallized, it cemented the mixture into solid layers. Most coquina along Florida’s coast formed about 120,000 years ago, when the sea level was 7–20 feet higher than it is today.

Cultural Significance: 

The Anastasia Formation of coquina — found along Florida’s Atlantic coast — was quarried on Anastasia Island to build the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. This unique stone’s natural composition helped the fort absorb cannon fire rather than crumble under it.
